Doctor who is the time lord, a race that has the knowledge to travel in time, Time lords live on the planet called Gallifrey and they do not die like rest of the races, they just regenerate into new person.Usually each time lord is limited to 12 regeneration but for Doctor they have made exception gifted him with 12 additional regeneration With each regeneration the new person has new skills, new personality, but it regain the memories and skills of the previous Doctors.For the reasons that you should know, or those of you who did not watched will discover when you watch, Doctor is always somewhere around that earth and takes one passenger to be his helper in every season.

So far every regeneration of Doctor was Male until the latest season where Doctor Who regenerated into a female. That is the first time although it was mentioned in the show long time ago that its possible. Doctor who is for its fans and all of those who watch like Sherlock Holmes, there is so many details hidden in each story and all stories are connected and its just contagious once you start watching.
