In this post about movies like Forrest Gump we will try to expand your watching pleasure with similar movies. We will list some of the best films similar to Forrest Gump and describe each one, so you can decide which ones are worth watching.

Forrest Gump tells the story of an unlikely hero who just happens to run into history while doing his ordinary things. The film has been said to be “a landmark in American cinema” by Roger Ebert, and it was named “the most popular movie of all time” by IMDb users.

The movie’s protagonist is not your typical hero; he’s slow-witted but likable and determined enough to become involved with historical events as they occur around him.

Why is Forrest Gump so good?

There are many reasons why Forrest Gump is such a great movie.

It has been voted on and ranked as one of the greatest movies ever made for some very valid reasons: It includes amazing acting performances from Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The storyline itself goes through key stages in American history that really resonates with audiences. Not to mention how well written the script was along with an excellent score/soundtrack which brings together everything you need for what can be considered a masterpiece. If I had to pinpoint exactly what it was about this movie that works so well, however, I would probably have to go with the fact that it’s just so easy for anyone who watches this movie to relate to. It doesn’t matter if you’re young, old, male, or female; Forrest Gump can be enjoyed by everyone and is one of those movies where every time I watch it there are different things about it that make me appreciate it more than before.

What other movies like Forrest Gump should I watch?

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies ever made, in my opinion and the first on the Movies Like Forrest Gump list.

It tells the story about an innocent man who goes to prison for a crime he did not commit and has to deal with being confined behind bars while using his wits to survive against corrupt officials who are determined that he should never be released.

This film was adapted from Stephen Kings’s short novella “Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption” which appeared in Different Seasons collection of works by King published 1986. It was nominated for seven Oscars but only won two technical awards including Best Adapted Screenplay (Frank Darabont) and Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins).

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is another one of my favorite movies similar to Forrest Gump.

It tells the story of a very intelligent teenager who decides he wants to have an adventure on his own rather than be stuck at school for what would’ve been just another boring day there. He comes up with this plan by pretending that he feels ill so he can get permission from his parents, but then when Ferris wakes up in the morning and begins having second thoughts about whether or not it was such a good idea after all.

There are many reasons why I think people should watch this movie if they haven’t already done so; It has a great dialogue between characters which makes you feel like you’re part of their conversations.

American Beauty

American Beauty can be seen as a dark comedy about the loss of innocence that takes place in suburbia.

It tells the story of Lester Burnham who is having his midlife crisis and decides to start living life on his own terms; even if it means breaking all conventionality which leads him into some very strange situations with people he never thought he would associate himself with.

The acting performances by Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch (Lester’s daughter), Chris Cooper & Wes Bentley are amazing! But my favorite thing about this movie is how well written it was along with its outstanding score/soundtrack… they both go together perfectly as peanut butter cups dipped in chocolate which makes American beauty yet another one best movies like Forrest Gump.

Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman is a romantic comedy directed by Garry Marshall and written for the screen by J.F Lawton.

It tells the story of Edward Lewis, a very successful businessman who meets Vivian Ward at a hotel in Beverly Hills where he mistakes her as being one of those women that sell their bodies to men because she’s dressed like a prostitute after running out into traffic without looking first… But it turns out later on when they start going on dates together that his assumptions were false and what you have here is another classic love story with laughs along the way which makes this movie so good! The fact that I can watch Pretty Woman over & over again still not get sick of watching it says something about how great this film really was/is.

Titanic

Titanic is one of those movies where you have to watch the movie from beginning to end without stopping it because if you do…you’ll miss something important that could change your whole perspective about what’s going on.

The story takes place aboard a British ocean liner making its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in April 1912 as well as among others who are trying to survive after being trapped inside Titanic for hours with no way out before it completely sinks into the sea below. I think this film deserves an award or two based on how much money was put into making this Hollywood production! It had a budget of $200 million and made over $600 million at theaters alone which means lots & lots of people must’ve watched Titanic when it first came out.

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is a romantic comedy that takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania about an arrogant weatherman named Phil Connors who gets stuck forever living the same day over and over again.

The only reason why I wanted to watch this movie was because of Bill Murray… but as I continued watching it, there were so many more reasons for me wanting to see Groundhog Day which made it such a good film! The dialogue between characters fits perfectly along with its soundtrack score which makes you want nothing more than just keep on watching until the very end.

It’s definitely one of those movies like Forrest Gump and everyone should give ground hog day at least one chance before they start judging themselves whether or not they would enjoy it.

Schindler’s List

Schindler’s List is a 1993 film that takes place in German-occupied Poland and tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a businessman who saves over 1100 Jews from concentration camps.

Based on true events when he was able to save more than a thousand people during the time period when Adolf Hitler had this crazy idea about trying to take over Europe… it wasn’t easy for him but I’m sure glad there were heroes like Oscar Schindler along with many others we should never forget! This movie definitely deserves five stars because all three hours of watching it feel like only thirty minutes instead which makes one helluva good watch! If you haven’t seen Schindler’s list yet then please do yourself a favor and watch it.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan takes place during World War II as a group of American soldiers led by Capt. Miller goes on a mission to find Pvt. James Francis Ryan who is the last surviving brother in his family after losing everyone he’s ever known and cared about…

As an action & war film, Saving private Ryan definitely delivers with so many great moments that will have you sitting at the edge of your seat wondering what might happen next! I personally enjoyed watching this movie because there was always something happening even if it wasn’t just fighting or shooting someone down which makes for good entertainment all around no matter how old you are especially when it’s based on true events like these were back then.

Gladiator

Gladiator is a historical epic that takes place in the late Roman Republic where General Maximus Decimus Meridius struggles to keep his family safe as well as serve out the remainder of what was left of being Emperor Marcus Aurelius’s right-hand man after he passed away before Nero could take over.

I’ve seen Gladiator a couple of times but never got tired watching it even if I already knew who ended up winning… this film will have you on your feet cheering for more at every twist & turn which makes it one helluva good movie! In my opinion, Ridley Scott did an incredible job directing and writing this whole story from beginning to end with Russell Crowe playing such a great role along with Joaquin Phoenix too.

Braveheart

Braveheart is a historical epic that takes place during the 13th century where Sir William Wallace gives up his comfortable life to fight back against King Edward I of England who had taken over Scotland with all these crazy new rules and unfair laws.

I watched Braveheart for the first time not too long ago but it definitely reminded me why Mel Gibson was such an amazing actor because this film gave him so many chances to prove himself which he did perfectly! This movie has everything anyone would ever want whether you love action, drama, or even some comedy thrown in at times… there’s no way one couldn’t enjoy watching Braveheart especially if they are Scottish themselves like me lol. Memento is a 2000 neo-noir psychological thriller film that takes place in two separate time periods as the main character tries to find his wife’s murderer while struggling with anterograde amnesia which makes it difficult for him to remember what happened more than a few minutes ago.

If you haven’t watched Life is beautiful then please do yourself a favor and start doing so right away, especially if you’re into movies like Forrest Gump with various twists at every turn.

The Green Mile

The Green Mile is a 1999 American fantasy crime drama film that takes place in the 1930s where Paul Edgecomb and his fellow prison guards watch over this one prisoner who has magical powers to heal people which makes them question if he’s really guilty of murdering two little girls. There are a lot of movies like Green Mile recorded and the reason was the glory and hype of the original movie.

This movie might be long as hell but it doesn’t feel like three hours at all because The Green Mile always keeps you on your toes wondering what will happen next! Tom Hanks did such an amazing job playing the main role along with Michael Clarke Duncan too… I can go on and on about how great these actors were throughout this whole story, definitely check out The Green Mile today and see for yourself why everyone loves watching movies like Forrest Gump so much! 🙂

This movie has such mixed reviews but I personally love watching movies like Forrest Gump because they always make me think in ways no other movies have done before… Big Fish was definitely able to do this for me with its unique storytelling methods which made it even more fun trying to figure out what was real or not lol! Good Morning, Vietnam

Good Morning, Vietnam is a 1987 American comedy-drama film that takes place in the 1960s where Adrian Cronauer tries to change how people perceive America’s involvement in Vietnam which makes for some interesting days on air.

I remember watching Good Morning, Vietnam when I was younger and really enjoying it… looking back now though I can see why so many people would not like this movie since it can be very cheesy at times with Robin Williams’ character being overly obnoxious & loud throughout most of the scenes lol! This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch movies like Forrest Gump because they’re still pretty enjoyable overall but just don’t expect too much if you decide to check out this one.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 American romantic drama film that takes place in the 1920s where Evelyn Couch comes across this old friend of hers named Ninny who tells her about an amazing story about two women she used to know.

If you’re not too sure whether or not you would want to watch this one yet, let me just say its better than your average chick flick so give it a chance anyway if anything sounds interesting… no matter what though keep in mind there some pretty sad parts throughout each of them.

Atonement

This is one of the most critically acclaimed movies that I’ve ever seen and also happens to be another movie like Forrest Gump.

The story follows a young girl who discovers her older sister’s secret, which then causes their relationship to become strained – but it gets even more complicated when she finds herself involved in an incident at her own home for which she blames herself.

Atonement has been described as “a masterpiece” by many people who have watched it and has received multiple nominations from numerous award ceremonies. There are some truly heart-wrenching moments throughout this film along with scenes where you will find yourself on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. If you’re looking for something similar to Forrest Gump Check it out.

Benny and Joon

Benny and Joon is a unique movie that tells the story of Benny; an odd man who works at his uncle’s grocery store but has some mental health issues.

Joon on the other hand is a young woman with similar problems to those of Benny, so she moves in with him hoping they both be able to help each other through their illness.

I have watched this film more times than I can count! Partly because it is one of my favorite movies ever made by Johnny Depp – although he isn’t necessarily playing as anyone you would expect which makes for interesting viewing. It also stars Aidan Quinn along with Mary Stuart Masterson who are all great actors/actresses too. This film definitely deserves its place on the list of movies like Forrest Gump.

Hacksaw Ridge

Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss who was a real American hero during World War II, but not because he fought on the front line against his fellow soldiers – actually quite the opposite.

Desmond refused to hold or fire any weapons due to his religious beliefs which caused him to be ridiculed by most people around him; however, that didn’t stop him from going into battle and saving countless lives when he single-handedly saved 75 men without ever carrying a gun in defense himself!

This is another movie like Forrest Gump that I would describe as being “a masterpiece” with incredible performances put in by all involved including Andrew Garfield (who just happens to be one-half of my favorite actors)

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the latest film by Quentin Tarantino – and it’s nothing short of incredible!

The story follows Rick Dalton who is an aging star of a western TV series along with his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth as they try to make their way through life.

I love how this movie gives you some unexpected laughs throughout which makes for a great viewing experience but also delivers on the drama side too without ever feeling forced or out-of-place. It really does have everything that I would want to see in movies like Forrest Gump; amazing acting performances (especially by Margot Robbie), plenty of action scenes, and even romance thrown into the mix for good measure! If you haven’t watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood you don’t know what you are missing.

Road to Perdition

Road to Perdition is a classic mobster movie that tells the story of Michael Sullivan, an enforcer for Irish crime boss John Rooney.

After his son witnesses something he shouldn’t have done – it gets him in trouble with the wrong people which forces father and son on the run from everyone they know including each other!

This film was nominated for several awards when it first came out in 2002 driving its popularity up even higher since then. It stars Tom Hanks who plays one of my favorite characters I’ve ever seen along with Paul Newman among others, but perhaps what makes this movie one of my personal favorites are all of the twists and turns throughout where you will never be able to guess who lives or dies until every single character has been killed off! If you haven’t seen this movie yet I would highly recommend it.

These are all great movies like Forrest Gump which have some similar themes to the original film while also being incredibly different so there is something for everyone no matter your taste in movies or what you’re expecting (and they are definitely worth checking out).

The Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happyness is another classic movie based on a true story about Chris Gardner who finds himself homeless with his son along the streets in San Francisco.

He desperately tries to find work and provide for his child, but no one will give him a chance because he doesn’t have any experience – until finally, an unpaid internship comes up which could be just what he needs to get back on track!

This film stars Will Smith as Chris Gardner so you know it’s going to be great even before you watch it, and I think this has become one of my favorite movies like Forrest Gump since watching it again recently due to how much more touching it was from when I first watched it many years ago.

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is a thrilling drama about Jamal Malik, an 18-year old orphan from the slums of India who competes on the Hindi version of “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?”

He goes through many difficult questions which seem impossible at first glance but he always has the right answers – making him believe that fate brought these events together for something much more important.

This film was released just last year and quickly became one of my personal favorite movies like Forrest Gump because it shows such a unique culture that we don’t really get to see in Hollywood films very often with all kinds of amazing camera angles and cinematography throughout plus some incredible performances by everyone involved!

The Other Sister

The Other Sister is a movie about Carla Tate, a mentally challenged girl who just turned 18 and has to start living on her own for the first time.

Her life changes completely when she meets somebody new and falls in love with him – but he doesn’t know that she isn’t what he thinks she is at all!

This film was nominated for several awards after it came out which definitely proves how good critics think this movie really is so I would highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already seen The Other Sister yet because it’s one of those movies like Forrest Gump where there are truly some unexpected twists throughout!

Of Mice and Men

This Of Mice and Men is the last on the Movies Like Forrest Gump list and it is a western drama based on the novel by John Steinbeck.

It tells the story of George Milton who takes on a new responsibility when he starts working with his new friend Lennie Small – however, their dream to someday buy some land seems more unlikely than ever before!

This movie stars Gary Sinise as George Milton along with many other well-known actors which makes it one of my favorite movies like Forrest Gump because I think there are several scenes throughout that make you truly question what’s going to happen next even though this film isn’t necessarily about suspense or horror (but definitely still worth watching nonetheless)

The Pursuit of Happyness, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Other Sister is a great movie like Forrest Gump. They each have some similar themes to the original film while also being incredibly different so there is something for everyone no matter your taste in movies or what you’re expecting (and they are definitely worth checking out).
