Movies like Se7ven and why watch them
What does a good movie list look like? I think it looks something like this: movies like se7en. When I say “movies like se7en” what comes to mind is an iconic film that has suspense and a dark tone but also makes you think about life and death. In this post, we will discuss 25 films similar to Se7en!
The Shining (1980)
A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
A young F.B.I. cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims.
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
A young couple moves into an apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.
A Quiet Place (2018)
This is a new movie from John Krasinski, who also directed and starred in The Hollars (2016).
A married couple lives an isolated life with their three children. While the family has lived on this farm for years, they never have spoken to or been seen by anyone else. They must be silent at all times because there are creatures that hunt by sound. If they hear you speak or even make noise while trying to figure out what creature it might be through sign language then one of them will find you within seconds and kill everyone in your family until only the last person remains alive.
This is a classic story about a shark that attacks people on the beach. It’s up to police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and grizzled old fisherman Quint (Robert Shaw) to hunt down the great white before it strikes again. This movie launched Spielberg into superstardom in addition to creating one of the film’s most iconic villains: The Great White Shark.
In Alien, the crew of commercial spaceship land on what they think is an abandoned planet. But it turns out that this planet was once inhabited by monsters who are ready to hunt them down one by one. This film inspired multiple sequels as well as video games and comics! One notable scene from this movie shows the monster attacking one character in particular and then another (that’s all we can say without spoiling anything).
Saw (I and II) (2004-2005)
This is a series about two men who are played by Cary Elwes and Danny Glover. They wake up in an abandoned bathroom with no idea how they got there or why they were kidnapped. There’s a dead body between them, so one of the men knows he must kill the other to make his escape alive – but neither man can be certain which of them will die! The Saw franchise has inspired six sequels as well as video games across multiple platforms. This movie introduced us all to “Jigsaw”–the villain that plays mind games on people and tries to get them to think about their lives before it’s too late…and some movies like saw have even been released since then (including SAW II).
This Alfred Hitchcock classic is about a woman named Marion Crane, who steals $400,000 from her employer before heading to the Bates Motel. She stays at this motel with its strange owner Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), and what happens next will change everything! This film has been remade twice in addition to being referenced numerous times throughout pop culture–even today. It’s also inspired two sequels as well as video games across multiple platforms.
Although these movies all have their own unique plots and stories they are very similar because of how dark the tone is – there’s just something so enthralling about dark films that make me want to watch them again…and again…and again!
Gone Girl (2014)
This is a story about Nick Dunne, who awakens one day to find that his wife Amy has gone missing. He becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance due to conflicting statements as well as his odd behavior following her disappearance. This film caused quite a stir when it was first released but also received multiple accolades – including Golden Globe wins for both Best Actress (Rosamund Pike) and Supporting Actor (Ben Affleck). It’s based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Gillian Flynn, so you know there are plenty of twists and turns along with jaw-dropping surprises!
Paranormal Activity (2007)
This is a story about a young couple, Katie and Micah, who begins to suspect that something sinister has invaded their home. They use recording devices on every floor of the house in an attempt to figure out what’s going on – but as they get closer and closer to finding out the truth behind this mystery…well let’s just say it doesn’t end well for them! This film was so popular upon its release that there have been five sequels released since then (and another one coming soon). There are also video games inspired by Paranormal Activity across multiple platforms including mobile phones…which goes to show how much people love these movies!
This is a story about teenagers who are being murdered in their town, and when Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) becomes the killer’s next target she must figure out what he wants before it’s too late. This film features multiple sequels as well as video games inspired by Scream across several platforms including mobile phones…and even has its own television series! Although all of these films have completely different plots they do share one thing in common: suspense – which makes them so good to watch over and over again.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
This is a story about Dr. Malcolm Crowe, who takes on a patient named Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment). He sees dead people and believes himself to be haunted – but when he meets the child’s psychologist things begin changing for him in ways that will make you think twice! This film features several sequels as well as video games across multiple platforms including mobile phones …and even has its own television series! Although all of these films have completely different plots, they do share one thing in common: suspense–which makes them so good to watch over and over again.
This film isn’t like se7en – it’s similar to Se7en!
The Exorcist is a classic horror movie, and in my opinion, one of the best movies ever made. This chilling tale about demonic possession has everything from gore to suspense to just plain creepiness. I’d say this film is better than se7en because it has much more content that you can enjoy for years after watching; although they are both super famous and popular films today – which makes them great choices if you’re looking for something new on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video (we all know those services often have terrible selections). The story itself follows two priests who try their hardest at performing an exorcism but run into many obstacles along the way including a lack of faith and more.
Nightmare on Elm Street
While this movie is more similar to Se7en, it’s still a great choice if you’re looking for something like se!
This film is the first in the Nightmare on Elm Street series which consists of eight films. If you’ve watched horror movies before and know what slashers are then I’m sure you’d recognize Freddy Krueger as he has become an iconic character even though his storyline isn’t anything new – but who cares? He makes up for that with creativity when attacking people (especially children). The plot follows several teens being killed off by someone they thought was dead: their dreams. This crazy man wants revenge after having been burned alive which adds another element to why these kids are dying while asleep other than just pure suspense.
This is another great movie to watch that’s similar to see definitely!
The third film in the Alien franchise ups the ante with a new heroine (Sigourney Weaver) who tries her best at fighting off aliens and staying alive. This sequel takes place directly after Aliens when Ripley was rescued by a prison ship, which then crashes on an abandoned planet where one of her old foes awaits – yikes! The tone here changes from action-packed suspense to pure horror as more people die while this alien continues its search for fresh hosts. I’d say this is better than se7en because it has much more content you can enjoy years later; although they are both super famous and popular today… so either way, you win out!
28 Days Later
This film isn’t quite like se7en, but it’s still a great choice if you’re looking for something similar to see!
28 Days Later is one of my favorite zombie movies because the zombies move so quickly and are hard to outrun – I hate when they are slow or have poor motor skills. The plot follows an unnamed man who wakes up from a coma in a London hospital only to find that everyone has been wiped off by some kind of virus causing them all into violent killers. This movie definitely adds suspense with its unique twist on what we know about zombies which makes it more realistic (in my opinion). It’s better than se7en due to how action-packed and intense the whole thing is: nonstop until the very end.
This film isn’t exactly like se7en, but it’s still an excellent choice if you’re looking for something similar!
Black Swan is a psychological thriller that follows Nina who has been selected to play the title role in her ballet company. This leads to success as she transforms into “The Black Swan” and even wins awards – but this transformation also makes her crazy (or does it?). The plot here continues on with many twists later down the line which I won’t spoil because some of them are quite surprising; although they do tend to drag out toward the end so be prepared for that if you choose to watch this one. It’s definitely better than se7en due to its impressive acting and interesting storyline…
Nightmare Before Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 stop-motion musical dark fantasy film. It was directed by Henry Selick and produced/co-written by Tim Burton, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Caroline Thompson from an original story idea by Michael McDowell for Disney’s Touchstone Pictures. The film features Danny Elfman’s musical score and Chris Sarandon on vocals as Jack Skellington (the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town) alongside other famous celebrities such as Catherine O’Hara, William Hickey, Glenn Shadix and Ken Page voicing various characters in the movie.
A young boy named Jack lives in the realm of Halloween town where he slowly becomes obsessed with bringing his own holiday to life: Christmas!
Friday the Thirteenth
Friday the 13th is a 1980 American independent slasher film directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller. The film grossed over $39 million at the United States box office, making it the highest-grossing horror film in history when it was released (losing to Spielberg’s Jaws after two years).
The movie follows se7en unfortunate camp counselors who are hunted down one by one on Friday, June 13 — which just so happens to be Friday the Thirteenth!
Carrie is a 1976 American supernatural horror film directed by Brian De Palma and written by Lawrence D. Cohen, based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King (who has starred in two feature films adapted from his novels). The story revolves around Carrie White, a shy teenage girl who uses her newly discovered telekinetic powers to exact revenge against those who teased her at school — until one day when an equally powerful bully turns it back on her.
The movie follows timid teenager Carrie White as she discovers that she possesses terrifying psychic abilities: most specifically psychokinesis! She eventually realizes that everyone must pay for their cruel treatment towards both herself and her mother…and then some!
Halloween is a 1978 American independent slasher film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut. The story follows serial killer Michael Myers as he stalks teenager Laurie Strode (Curtis) on Halloween night. This movie was very influential to the horror genre of movies!
Michael Myers escapes from an asylum after killing his sister Judith; fifteen years later, he returns home to kill again – especially when someone else has moved into what used to be Judith’s house…Laurie Storoe for instance! She just so happens to be babysitting two children that evening…oops?
This is the 22nd movie on our list of movies like se7en and it stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Jared Leto, and Helena Bonham Carter. This film does not have a traditional narrative structure but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the most thought-provoking films ever made. Instead what we get are two characters who start an underground fight club because they feel alienated by society (sound familiar?). If you loved Seung and Mills as protagonists then this movie is for you!
This is the 23th movie on our list of movies like Se7en and it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson. This film was directed by Martin Scorsese and follows a U.S Marshal who travels to an island for a criminally insane asylum in order to investigate the disappearance of the patient but what he finds there will disturb you forever!
Dawn of the Dead
This is a movie that is similar to Se7en and it stars Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer. This film was directed by Zack Snyder who said that he wanted to make a Night of the Living Dead remake with good actors. Well… mission accomplished! Just kidding but this zombie-filled horror classic will definitely leave you thinking about life after death.
This is the last movie on our list of movies like se7en and it stars Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina. This film was directed by Takashi Miike who has made a ton of films that have been distributed all over North America so you’ve probably seen one or two (like 13 Assassins). Anyways this movie follows an aging widower whose son sets him up with a new woman at which point he falls in love but he soon begins to suspect something isn’t quite right about her…
