The alpha male has been a popular figure in movies for decades. From the iconic John Wayne to the modern-day Hugh Jackman, we’ve seen many different versions of what it means to be an alpha male on screen.
In our list of 21 movies every alpha male should watch, we cover some oldies but goodies and also include some newer films you may not have heard about yet.
So without further ado here is the 21 Movie Every Alpha Male Should Watch list.
- Fight Club
This 1999 film starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton follows the life of a depressed office worker who creates an underground fighting club to help men release their inner aggression.
This is one for those alpha males with a dark side!
- The Shawshank Redemption
This is a movie that everyone should watch. I think it’s worth watching because of the moral behind this story, and how no matter what you’re going through in life if you just keep pushing on for things to get better. It also has one of my favorite actors in it, Morgan Freeman; he always makes his characters feel so real.
The Shawshank Redemption was released on October 14th, 1994 by Castle Rock Entertainment/Columbia Pictures Corporation and directed by Frank Darabont who did an amazing job at directing the film with its cast (Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne) while being written by Stephen King himself! The director does an excellent job portraying different camera angles throughout the entire movie which Really captures your attention
The 2000 epic film, “Gladiator,” stars Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius and Joaquin Phoenix as Emperor Commodus. The movie is set in 180 AD when the Roman empire was nearing collapse with emperor Marcus Aurelius on his deathbed. The story follows a general of Rome’s armies who becomes an enslaved combatant turned gladiator after being betrayed by those close to him.
Another great movie for alpha males. This is a story of William Wallace who defied King Edward I’s invasion and led his countrymen in the First War of Scottish Independence (1296–1328). Mell Gibson was remembered for his role as William Wallace. Braveheart is one movie every alpha man should see!
- Saving Private Ryan
This 1998 movie shows a group of US soldiers who go on an unsanctioned mission to find one soldier. The viewer sees the atrocities that the men in this squad commit and it becomes clear how they are all alpha males; even though some may not have wanted their job, they do what is necessary for survival.
The only female character appears at the end when she meets Tom Hanks (Private Ryan) after he has lost his friends during World War II. She asks him if he wants her to put flowers on his friend’s graves but instead says ‘No’. It is here where we see Private Ryan as being more than just another alpha male – he respects death enough without needing any kind of ceremonial gesture.
- Universal Soldier
This is a great movie for alpha males because it provides an opportunity to reflect on the nature of war and how often people die. This film features Jean-Claude Van Damme, which will have your testosterone levels through the roof. It was one of the most watched
What is it about alpha male movies that make them so great? They’re the best pieces of cinema, but what makes them such a huge hit with audiences? Well, we can simply look to some of the greatest films ever made for answers. Here are three examples:
As the title suggests, this film is part of a franchise that has seen several installments and stars some of Hollywood’s most iconic male actors. These include Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson as well as Harrison Ford among others. It centers on an elite force comprised entirely of veteran mercenaries who are forced out to confront a savage warlord from their pasts in order to do so they must defend one last town with everything they’ve got. The Expendables New Blood boasts all-star cast members such as Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, and Dolph Lundgren – but it also features acclaimed newcomer Kellan Lutz in his first major role. This movie offers action for everyone!
- Rocky Balboa (Rocky II, III, IV)
All Parts of the Rocky Franchise is Great To watch for alpha males but Rocky IV is one of the most iconic movies in this genre and features some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. It also spawned a successful spin-off with “Creed.” Rocky Balboa, starring Sylvester Stallone, was released back in 2006 after four decades since the first film debuted. The story takes place roughly 20 years later – which means that it’s about Rocky as he deals with retirement life for the time being.
- The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie of all time. Heath Ledger’s Joker performance in this film has been praised by critics and audiences alike, and it’s a damn shame he died before making more films or at least doing press for this one. Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) battles with his alter-ego to find out who killed Harvey Dent as well as trying to save Gotham City from an anarchistic terrorist group led by the Joker (Heath Ledger). The stakes are higher than ever before due to Dent being publically taken down on live TV, but Bruce Wayne sacrifices himself so that Commissioner Gordon can use him as bait for bringing in both the mob bosses and the terrorists together.
This is a cult movie. It is a classic. The film stars Al Pacino, who plays Tony Montana, an immigrant from Cuba to Miami in 1980 with the goal of being rich and powerful as possible. This mafia movie has some violence but it also shows how someone can have all they want if only he/she work hard enough for it. Although this film had a lot more than its fair share of controversy when released, I still think that anyone should watch Scarface at least once during their lifetime because it does show what life was like back then and how ruthless people were willing to be just for money.”
- American Sniper
This movie is kinda different than the other alpha male movies. It is about one man’s experience during his four tours of duty in Iraq and how he dealt with it when he came back to America.
– 12. Warrior
This movie is based on a true story of two brothers who were boxers that went head-to-head against each other for an MMA Championship belt, even though they were trained by different fighting styles. The film shows both perspectives and opinions from loved ones as well as rivals before, during, and after the fight –
- American Psycho
One of the movies where Christian Bale plays a crazed alpha male, American Psycho is a dark comedy about sexism in the workplace. Bale’s character Patrick Bateman kills his victims with an axe and disposes of their bodies by chopping them up into little pieces to make it easier for him to dump their remains down the garbage chute at work.
The movie shows that sometimes alpha males can be found in unexpected places such as Wall Street where men are expected to be ruthless toward each other while striving towards success even if they have to resort to unethical means or violence.
- Die Hard
Die Hard will Show you that not all alpha males are out to kill you. Imagine if Bruce Willis’ character is just trying to make it through the day like everyone else.
He’s thrown into an alpha-male role and he tries his best to be heroic but also has a humanizing streak for being such an ordinary person with family and friends. He wants nothing more than see them all safe in their own homes at Christmas time as much as we do, even though they don’t know that yet themselves.
This movie speaks volumes about what it means to be an alpha male: How one can have both “heroic” qualities as well as still be a regular guy who deserves love and compassion too – not just from others around him but himself too.”
This one is also special because it is one of the best mafia films ever made. The movie stars Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro, they play two friends who start out in life as petty thieves before becoming part of what can only be described as organized crime on an international scale.
16.Cape Fear -1991 remake with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte
Nick is a convicted rapist who spent 14 years in jail for his crime, but he has been released early after an attack on the judge that sent him to prison. He sets out to seek revenge on the family of his victims now living under one roof, which includes a successful lawyer played by Gregory Peck’s son (Chris). In order to succeed, he must first get inside their house – something Chris will be doing everything possible to stop from happening…
The film also stars Jessica Lange as Nick’s ex-wife whom he rapes again before setting off on his mission of vengeance.
So far, we’ve gone from the low-key and down-to-earth Rocky Balboa all the way up to a more intense Rambo. Dressed in his signature military attire and armed with an M60 machine gun, John J. Rambo is one of America’s most iconic alpha males on film. When he returns home after fighting in Vietnam for five years only to find that war has followed him back home as well, he kicks ass against various gangs who are trying to take over small towns such as Hope County without any help at first because it would have been too expensive if Stallone was there every time they filmed a new scene.
- The Dark Knight Rises
This is a movie that has alpha males, not only the lead character but also his enemies. There are many battles in this movie and much of it is hand-to-hand combat with a variety of weapons such as knives (a favorite weapon for Batman) or guns.
The Dark Knight Rises was very well received by critics upon its release in 2012: “As both an epic conclusion to Nolan’s three-part story about Bruce Wayne and Gotham City and a self-contained film, The Dark Knight Rises succeeds” said Lael Loewenstein from Variety magazine. Kofi Outlaw at Screenrant stated “In every sense, Christopher Nolan’s finale brings all the elements together into one explosive whole”
- Die Hard – With a Vengeance (1995)
Another part of Die Hard series, this movie is not less interesting than others from the series. There are countless shootings and battles between Hans Gruber’s henchmen and John McClane as well as new challenges that he had to face in order to save his wife Holly Gennaro who was taken hostage by the terrorists led by Karl Vreski. The main hero also has a wonderful time with Ellis’ secretary Lucy Gennero (played by one of the Hollywood sex symbols – Famke Janssen) during occasional private meetings which kindle sexual tension between them.
19 . Mad Max
The fully opposite type of the alpha male, Mad Max is a survivor. He has been through hell and high water on his journey of survival when he meets up with Furiosa in Fury Road. The thing that makes him so alpha though is the fact that every other living being seems to be dead around him. Another start that I would mention is the character of Tina Turner
- Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry
A man who is not afraid to get his hands dirty, or bloody for that matter. He does what he needs to do and doesn’t care about the legalities of it because in this world justice has been taken from him. Even though there are some alpha male traits we see in other characters such as Max and Aragorn, Dirty Harry stands out on this list with his moral ambiguity and lack of concern for law enforcement procedures
- Reservoir Dogs
Last on this list is Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 crime drama, Reservoir Dogs. If you’re a fan of Mr. Tarantino as I am then this movie will not disappoint in any way shape or form. The film follows the lives of six criminals from their point-of-view throughout their botched diamond heist that leaves most dead and one walking around with nothing but an earlobe to show for it all – hence “Reservoir Dogs”. There are many things that make this movie spectacular such as the direction by Mr. Tarantino himself and his use of Mexican standoff dialogue which only adds to the humor if you know what is being said (not very pleasant).
So, there you have it – 20 movies every alpha male should watch. What better way to spend your free time than on these films that are guaranteed to make any man feel more alpha? We’re looking forward to seeing some new additions in 2020 when we add this list again!
